A little maintenance

Taking some time over the holidays to do some work on the boat.

The mast is down and I just finished sanding it down to the bare carbon ready for a new clear coat. That should start tomorrow. Three or four coats should do it. I'm taking advantage that the Doyle loft is shut for the week and they have been kind to let me use it. Indoors should be easier on my and should help with faster curing.

Having the standing rigging looked over to see if it needs replacing, hopefully it is good for a couple more seasons.

  1. Hi, I've got a JS9000 too and need to put some protection on the mast. Would like to keep it clear if possible too. Do you mind telling me what product you use and what's the process?

    Thanks,

    Will.

  2. Hi Will,

I used Awlgrip clear coat. It is a two part, plus brushing solvent. I used the roll and tip method after sanding the mast back to bare carbon. Depending on the condition of your current clear coat you might not need to sand all the way. As per instructions from the folks at CST:
    1. Sand with 40 grit to get the rough and top layer off.
    2. Go to 80 grit until you get black powder
    3. Finish with 120 grit careful not to sand through the pattern (the pattern is the only reason to do the clear coat).

I masked off the sail track with tape before starting on the paint.

I put 4 coats on. You might be able to get 2 coats in a day with a wait time of 7 - 9 hours between coats. I only scuffed with a 3M pad in between the first three coats and wet sanded with 320 grit before the final 4th coat.

I highly recommend doing the work indoors or in a well covered area to keep the flying dust at bay, as everything will stick to the coating while curing.

Good luck, not a hard job.

BTW, where do you sail your JS?

  3. Thanks for the info! Doesn't sound too hard. There are two of us JS's sailing near Johannesburg in South Africa. We always keep an eye on your posts :) Like the mods you have done too - we are trying to keep the boats here more or less identical but a prod on the front like yours might be nice!

  4. The prod is a huge improvement, with the ability to carry a bigger spinnaker. I am very satisfied with it. I appreciate keeping the boats on the fleet similar, makes for better racing. However, the prod was designed and built by the boat designer and I believe he should have molds available from this build, so it might be a good upgrade for both of you. If either of you keep a blog or a site let me know, always like to know what others are doing with their boats.

  5. I think it's definitely something we'll do at some point..I haven't been able to find contact details for J Swarbrick anywhere have you got an email or something for him? Is he based in US now?

Have a website, not specifically about my boat, but stick most stuff on there - actually your site inspired me to do it, so thanks for that ;)
